Quick Interview Tips – Top 3 Things to do to Prepare for an Interview – When You’re Short on Time

Interviewing while working a full-time job can be difficult! There are only so many hours in the day to juggle everything, and interview preparation is often left to the last minute.

Here are the 3 quick steps to get ready for an interview, particularly if you are in a rush and want to cover the most important areas:

1.) Line up your experience with the job description

Being able to describe, in detail, how your experience lines up with the job is critical for success in an interview.

Go line by line through the job description, comparing it to your own resume. Make notes on each line of a time you’ve tackled each responsibility.

This exercise helps you to prepare so that when you are asked about your experience, the examples you are using are most relevant to the role you are interviewing for.

2.) Prepare Questions for the Interviewer

Asking great questions is one of the best ways to stand out in an interview.

Craft 5-10 thoughtful questions. Dig into the role itself, the responsibilities, the organization, team structure, systems & workflow.

Well-prepared questions are one of the easiest ways to show your interest in the job and your expertise and knowledge in the space.

3.) Be ready to answer the question: ‘what do you know about our company?’

There is a reason this is #3. If you’re short on time, first and foremost, be ready to talk about your own background and have questions to ask. Lastly, research the company. Find something very specific about the organization that you can work into a question or deliberately mention in the interview.

Find your interviewers on LinkedIn and get a quick sense of their backgrounds. If you have any familiarity with the companies they worked at, or schools they attended, make note of it and be sure to work it into the conversation.

If you’re in a rush, these quick steps will get you a well-rounded interview prep, and have you ready to go in a short amount of time.
