Resume Advice: Tailor Your Resume For the Job You Want

Some of the best resume advice is to tailor your resume for each role you are applying to.
By applying these 4 steps, you’ll ensure that your resume is speaking directly to the job you are applying for, making it more likely that you’ll secure an interview.
1.) Review the job description. Your resume should speak to the job you are applying for. Go through the bullet points on the job description and mirror those responsibilities on your resume wherever possible. You still need to hold true to your experience – of course! But using similar terminology as the job description will help make it clear that your experience is a match for the job.
2.) Add a Professional Summary. A Professional Summary at the top of your resume is an effective tool. You can use it to highlight your relevant experience that might otherwise be buried near the bottom of the resume. In your Professional Summary, spotlight technical skills, management experience, or specific systems knowledge that is directly listed on the job description you’re interested in. Once you build this Professional Summary, you can easily adjust it for any role you apply for.
3.) Re-order your bullet points. Most resumes are reviewed quickly, so it’s important that relevant information jumps out quickly at the reviewer. Take the time to reorder your bullet points, putting the most pertinent bullet points at the top of each section. Feel free to delete bullet points that are not relevant, or that distract from your key skillset.
4.) Use specifics. Wherever possible, use facts, figures, percentages, dollar amounts, etc. Using detailed figures captures the size and scope of the work you were doing. It is also a great way to paint a clear picture of all you’ve achieved throughout your career. If you’re applying for a role at a similarly sized company, similar revenue, employee size, etc., using these figures will show the parallels easily.
Taking these quick steps for every job you apply for is going to help your resume stand out against the competition.
